I receive great satisfaction and joy mounting birds and have been doing so for 64 years since the age of 14. I always strive to do the very best work that I am capable of and take pride in making all of my clients happy when they leave here with their bird. I retired from being a provincial wildlife biologist in 1997 when I started my commercial bird taxidermy business, Feathers Alive, now located in Peterborough, Ontario.
I completed my first bird mount at age 14 and it was a disaster and barely looked like a bird. Undeterred, I kept at it for the next 64 years until today and I still greatly enjoy what I do. I have mounted thousands of birds from the size of a hummingbird to a 24 pound (11 kg) wild turkey and almost everything in between, including more than 100 bird mounts for the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Birds have been mounted standing at rest, with or attacking prey, asleep, fighting, flying, swimming and with optional habitat as desired by my customers. I have now retired from taxidermy competitions in Canada and the United States but have won 7 Best in Show awards in international competition over the years.
I am a licensed taxidermist under the laws of Environment and Climate Change Canada. I will not accept any bird that was illegally obtained or possessed. Most birds require the owner to possess either a provincial or federal permit or licence and I will not accept birds into my business that are not legally so covered.
In Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will issue a free possession permit online for a legally obtained bird of prey (raptor). Nearly all songbirds are protected by Environment and Climate Change Canada which regulates their possession. I highly recommend that you check the following sites for more details on the possession of birds for possible mounting. Please see the Contact page to ask me any questions you may have.
